Better Choices, Better Health Facilitators

Facilitate workshops for people with diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure or other on-going health conditions. After completion of 4-day leader training (* typically held once a year), volunteer leaders facilitate workshops which meet for 2 1/2 hours per week for 6 consecutive weeks. Workshops include relaxation techniques, weekly goal setting, effective management of symptoms and difficult emotions, and other self-management strategies. No previous teaching experience is required; health care background not necessary. Workshops held in various locations. Must be post high school. Interested individuals can give us their contact information; you will be contacted when the next training session is scheduled.

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Child Development Center - Child Development Center Fargo, Fargo, ND

Supervise children in the child care we operate for our employee's children. 

Shifts vary - weekdays 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. ONLY.

Requirements: Aged 17 and up.

Cully’s Cabin Volunteer - Sanford Medical Center Fargo, Fargo, ND

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Work with assigned child or group of children on an assigned task.
  2. Assist the child life staff in supervising, cleaning and stocking playrooms maintained by the child life program.
  3. Visit patients in their rooms. Volunteers play games, work on art projects, talk, rock babies, etc.
  4. Accompany children (patients or family members) to the playroom/Cully’s Cabin or other scheduled child life activities.
  5. Provide respite for parents who wish to take a break.
  6. Help with special events or special visitors. Child life often hosts events to help entertain patients and families. Volunteers may be asked to help invite and bring patients to the location of the event, assist with/conduct tours for individuals or groups who have come to visit the patients, or pass out items that have been donated for the patients.
  7. Offer constructive, safe, and appropriate choices for patients and families.
  8. Be a good role model for families and promote a fun, enjoyable atmosphere.
  9. Provide continuity of care by giving regular feedback to the child life staff on the activities and status of patients.

Orientation, Training and Evaluations:

All volunteers need to attend the general orientation to Sanford with the Volunteer Services program prior to assignment to a site. Each prospective volunteer will meet with CLS to review job responsibilities, policies and the items on the Cully’s Cabin orientation checklist, and to have any possible questions answered prior to beginning the volunteer experience. Training and evaluation are an on-going process. Site supervisors will complete an annual evaluation.

Expectations for this Position:

The volunteer is responsible, flexible and maintains confidentiality. The patients and visitors are treated with kindness and respect. Volunteers keep safety a top priority. Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate to serve in this position. Volunteers will call the Child Life Specialists when they cannot come in to volunteer. Volunteers will not report to volunteer when they are ill or contagious. Volunteers will complete 6 months, 1 semester or 50 hours of volunteer work as a part of this commitment.

Times:

Monday – Friday, 9am – 12pm, 12pm – 3pm, 3pm – 6pm, 6pm – 9pm
Saturday and Sunday, 10 am–1 pm or 1–4 pm

Number of Hours:

Shifts are typically 2-3 hours

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Escort - Various Locations

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Volunteer will be located near but not directly adjacent to the guest service information desk. This is due to concerns related to client/patient confidentiality. If Guest Service staff is not on duty at the front main sliding door, the volunteer may approach the guests and ask how they can be of assistance.
  2. Escort patients, families and visitors to their destination.Walk with them and ask if they have any questions. Please be sure to introduce yourself as well.
  3. Tidy the entrance area and discharge area at Sanford Medical Center Fargo location by returning all unused carts or wheelchairs to the appropriate service. Tidy the lobby/waiting areas by disposing of trash and straightening magazines. Be sure to keep wheelchairs available for patient use.
  4. Offer hospitality by walking the main hallway and asking guests how we can assist them. Extend a friendly smile and a greeting.
  5. Assist Guest Services with various tasks such as: taking carts back up to the appropriate floor, taking donated magazines to the volunteer office, or delivering mail (SU volunteers).
  6. Evening and weekend volunteers may be asked to assist the gift shop by delivering flowers to patients.
  7. Volunteers are never allowed to assist a patient by lifting into a wheelchair, vehicle, etc. – this is a duty reserved for staff only

Times: Monday – Friday 7:00-11:30 am; 11:30 am-4:00 pm; 4:00 pm-8:00 pm; Saturday and Sunday shifts vary.

Requirements: Aged 17 and up.

Food Services Volunteer/Cashier - Prairie Mill & Fresh Market on Broadway - Fargo, ND

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in bussing/cleaning tables.
  2. Provide wonderful customer service: help customers, assist customers with selections and purchases.
  3. Assist by straightening, cleaning and restocking the display areas.
  4. Be willing to be trained as a cashier on the point of sale system in the restaurants and markets.
  5. Assist by answering the phone and using proper phone etiquette

Hours: Monday-Friday 11 am-1 pm 

Number of Hours: Shifts will be approximately 2 hours

Requirements: Aged 17 and up.

 

Gift Shop Volunteer/Cashier - Sanford Gift Shops, Fargo, ND

Position Responsibilities:                           

  1. Familiarize yourself with the merchandise that is available and where it is located when arriving for your shift.
  2. Provide wonderful customer service:
    • Help customers on the floor.
    • Demo products.
    • Assist customers with selections and purchases.
  3. Assist by straightening, cleaning and dusting the display areas. Assist by offering basic display ideas.
  4. Assist by filling balloons as needed once you have been shown the proper use of the helium tank.
  5. Be willing to be trained as a cashier on the point of sale system in Sanford Gifts.
  6. Familiarize yourself with the various hospital floors so that you can deliver merchandise as needed.
  7. Assist by answering the phone and taking phone orders using proper phone etiquette.
  8. Deliver flower/merchandise orders to patient rooms.
  9. Assist by unpacking and marking merchandise.

Volunteer will Perform this Position:

In Sanford Gift Shops – various locations.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, schedule will vary depending on location.

Number of Hours:

Shifts will be approximately 3-5 hours

Hospitality Volunteer - Sanford Medical Center Fargo, Fargo, ND

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Volunteer role will be based from the Amenities Guest Services desk in the Concourse and may be dispatched to address patient related tasks on all floors.
  2. Tasks may include but are not limited to:
    • Deliveries for mail, flowers, iPads, nooks, and specialty items such as gift shop and coffee shop products and merchandise.
    • Assisting patients with their belongings to the discharge exit
  3. Provide service to guests in the following visitor spaces:
    • Gathering spaces in EC
    • Gathering space 2
    • Gathering space 3
    • Gathering space 5
    • Gathering space 6
    • Gathering space 8
    • Gathering space 9
    • Gathering space 10
  4. All quiet spaces on the floors listed above
  5. Tasks associated with the spaces listed above include:
    • Visitation: ensuring the guests are comfortable and their needs are met.
    • Room maintenance: keeping spaces tidy, organizing magazine, stocking brochures, refilling coffee and other gathering space supplies, etc…
      • Gathering spaces, quiet spaces, kitchens, etc.

Knitters - Sanford Broadway Clinic, Fargo, ND

This is a volunteer position that can be accomplished at home. Booties can be made for our Family Birth Center and NICU. Bootie knitters follow our pattern and the yarn is supplied by us. Knitters may also use their own yarn and knit prayer shawls. There is no set pattern for the shawls but we ask they be the size of a large scarf. We are pleased to offer our patients these keepsakes!

Requirements: Aged 17 and up.

Pet Therapy - Various Locations, Fargo, ND

Pet Therapy dogs and their people. These 4-legged volunteers and their people visit our Children's Hospital, Eating Disorder and Rehab Units. Bring a smile to a patient by the wagging of a tail! Pets must be graduates of Obedience School and the specialized pet therapy training program through either FM Dog Obedience School or Pet Partners.

Shifts will be coordinated based upon volunteer availability.

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Personal Attendant Volunteer - Fargo, ND

Personal attendants will provide service in our Outpatient Dialysis Center. Volunteer will round with patients to provide conversation, personal care items such as blankets or pillows. They may assist with tasks such as coordinating phone calls or retrieving hard-to-reach items, or assisting with special requests. Volunteer will be in constant communication with nursing staff and will have numerous opportunities to observe nursing related functions within this environment.

Shifts available seven days/week
Shift times 8:00-12:00 or 12:00-4:00pm. Some flexibility with shift times.

Requirements: Aged 18 and up

Physical Therapy – Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, 25th Street and Sanford Southpointe Clinic, Fargo, ND

Assist therapist with equipment needs; stocking, cleaning and organizing Physical Therapy gym and patient rooms after patient care; clerical duties as assigned by therapist.  Perfect for any student considering Physical Therapy or Sports Medicine.

Shifts are varied - Mon through Fri

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Piano - Sanford Medical Center Fargo and Sanford Broadway Clinic, Fargo, ND

Play our lovely baby grand piano for customers and staff entering our hospital. 

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Popcorn - Various Locations, Fargo, ND

Make and sell popcorn while chatting with staff and visitors at the downtown Food Court. 

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Roger Maris Cancer Center - Sanford Broadway, Fargo, ND

There are five positions within this center. Must be post high school.

  1. Food Host - offer light snacks to patients in our Infusion Center; offer to visit as appropriate. Mon-Fri 9-11 am & 1:30 - 3:30 pm
  2. Look Good...Feel Better - the volunteer is responsible, flexible and maintains confidentiality.  Customers are treated with kindness and respect. Volunteers must be a licensed cosmetologist to serve in this role.

Requirements: Aged 18 and up.

Veteran Ambassador Volunteer - Various Locations, Fargo, ND

Position Responsibilities:

Looking to recruit outgoing veterans to provide visitation to hospitalized veteran patients. Volunteer will round within the medical center, thanking veterans for their service, providing education regarding Sanford resources, and engaging in conversation.

Orientation, Training and Evaluations:

All volunteers will be provided general orientation and onboarding through the volunteer office. Site specific training will be provided by a member of the Sanford Veteran Ambassador program

Confidentiality: Volunteer will adhere to Sanford policy on confidentiality.

Times: Shifts are available daily. Visitation times are flexible. Volunteers will typically commit to a minimum of one day per week.

Requirements: Must be 21 years or older and an active or veteran member of the armed forces.
