Types of Knee Replacements

A variety of knee replacements are performed by our team, and the options available to you will depend on your personal health history and the extent of wear or damage on your knee. The three types of knee replacements Sanford Health offers are:

  • Total knee replacement – Also known as a total knee arthroplasty, this procedure replaces the surfaces on the ends of both the femur and tibia with artificial components, restoring proper function to the knee joint.
  • Partial knee replacement – This procedure removes the damaged section of your knee joint and replaces it with an artificial component.
  • Patellofemoral replacement – This procedure is effective for patients with severe osteoarthritis under their kneecap with an otherwise healthy knee joint. By resurfacing part of the patellofemoral section, the rest of the knee can be preserved through a less invasive surgery.

Preparing for Knee Replacement Surgery

Your care team will help you prepare for your surgery so you can recover safely and effectively.

The preparation process typically involves examining your physical health, reviewing your medical history, meeting with your care team, adjusting the layout and accessibility points of your home, and creating a plan for follow-up care and recovery. Please consult your provider for more details.

Recovering from Knee Replacement Surgery

The recovery process for a knee replacement will vary depending on the patient and type of procedure. Most patients will discharge from the hospital the day of their surgery or the day after, and the recovery process will typically last a few months.

Follow-up visits will begin within a few weeks of discharge and are scheduled periodically based on the care team’s recommendations. During this time, it is important for patients to follow their recovery instructions and report any concerns to their provider.

As part of the recovery process, we can bring Sanford Home Care rehabilitation therapy services to you in the comfort of your home. Our team provides customized, quality services so you can safely reach your goals.

Same-Day Knee Replacement

Many knee replacement patients are eligible for same-day surgery, meaning they can discharge and go home the day of their operation.

FAQs about Knee Replacements

How long will my new knee joint last?

Most joint implants last for 20 years, but high-impact activities and other health factors can weaken them sooner. Talk to your provider about how you can prolong your joint replacement.

When will I be able to walk again?

You will most likely begin walking on your first day of recovery with the assistance of a walker. Over the course of a few weeks, you will regain your mobility gradually and need less assistance as you build strength in your knee.

When will I be able to drive again?

Most patients can drive four weeks after their operation, but that timeline can vary. Talk to your care team for more details, and do not drive while you are taking pain medication.

When can I travel again?

You can begin traveling when you feel comfortable. Remember to walk at least once an hour and to follow your provider’s instructions for moving frequently.

Will I be able to participate in activities without hurting my new joint?

You can resume low-impact activities like walking, swimming and golfing when you are finished healing. Please consult your surgeon and medical team if you have questions about a specific sport or activity.

Will I be able to stay at home by myself after my surgery?

We strongly recommend you have someone stay with you for at least three days and nights after you are discharged from the hospital. Please talk to your care team if you have any concerns or need assistance with your recovery.

Will I have pain or discomfort after my surgery?

Most patients will have some form of pain or discomfort after a joint replacement surgery, but this can typically be managed through physical therapy and pain medications. Please follow your provider’s instructions for recovery, which will most likely include ankle pump exercises, rest, ice therapy and the elevation of your leg.

Will I need physical therapy after my surgery?

Yes, your care team will give you instructions on how to exercise and build strength during recovery. You may need to go to an outpatient facility for further rehabilitation.
