Sports medicine: Sanford Health’s sports medicine specialists are experienced in working with athletes of all levels. Many providers are the official partners of several D1 teams and local colleges and universities.

To name a few of our partners, we work with the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Augustana University. Our specialists also support local athletes at community schools for on-site athletic training.

Wide-Awake Hand Surgery

A majority of hand surgeries are performed using local anesthesia, meaning the patient doesn’t need to be sedated. Instead, the hand or finger is injected with lidocaine to numb it.

Local anesthesia comes with benefits. Patients can go home after their surgery and do not need to fast or interrupt their medication regimen. We’ve performed thousands of hand surgeries using local anesthesia and most patients rate the experience as better or the same as going to a dentist appointment.

If you prefer some type of sedation during your surgery, talk to your surgeon about your options.

For qualifying patients, same day joint surgery comes with benefits. You’ll get your operation done in one day and won’t have to stay overnight in the hospital. These procedures also offer faster recovery times.

Concussion Services

We’re proud to have concussion specialists on our team. Concussion specialists offer expert assessment, management and treatment for concussions. We work with professional, collegiate, high school and youth athletes to prevent and treat concussions.

Our team now offers concussion baseline testing. Kids ages 10 and older need to be screened every one to two years. Adults need one baseline test. If the patient later suffers a concussion, we’ll use the baseline test results to get them back to where they were prior to the injury.

Concussion baseline testing takes 30 to 40 minutes and costs $40.
