Founded in 1987 as the Center for Biomedical Ethics, the DeGroot Center is committed to helping you address ethical issues that may arise before and during medical care. We work closely with integrative health, spiritual care, the Sanford Palliative Care team and the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

Consultations

Clinical ethics consultation is a free service available to all patients, caregivers and staff. Those involved with your care may be unsure how to proceed, need clarification or disagree. You can request a consultation with an ethics consultant or committee to help those involved better understand the situation. We offer recommendations, but the final decision always remains with doctors, patients and family.

We also provide research ethics and organizational ethics support to health care organizations, professionals and students.

Events

Bioethics education is available through educational events for employees, students and community members:

First Friday, a roundtable for ethical discussions held 7-8 a.m. on the first Friday of the month, October through April.
Ethics in Action Conference, held annually at Sanford USD Medical Center.

Library

In conjunction with the Wegner Health Sciences Information Center, the DeGroot Center provides a library of literature and periodicals devoted to the study and understanding of ethics as it applies to medicine.

Integrative Health

We encourage a comprehensive, person-centered approach to health care, mindfully blending the art of healing and the science of medicine to promote the health of the whole person - body, mind and spirit. Please request a consult for our inpatient services for hospitalized patients. Options include:

End-of-life planning is not an easy topic to talk about. We don’t want to die, but we also don’t want to suffer. To make an advance care plan, think about what kind of health care you’d want if you could not talk or write.

We are supported by charitable donations to the Abel and Norma DeGroot Endowment for Bioethics, Humanities, and the Healing Arts. These funds support ongoing efforts of the Center and afford opportunity to invite speakers of national and international renown. Now the Center has evolved into a shared community endeavor. One of the major successes of the Center has been fostering institutional relationships.

Parking

The DeGroot Center is located on the fifth floor of the Sanford USD Medical Center easily accessible from the B elevators. Free valet parking and self-park lots are available off 18^th Street and Grange Avenue.
