When to Seek Fertility Care
When you’re trying to conceive, it’s important to start by talking with your primary care provider, OB/GYN or midwife. They’ll help make sure your body is getting the vitamins and nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy.
However, if you’ve been trying to get pregnant for over a year – or six months if you are over 35 – fertility and reproductive medicine may be the best next step, and a referral isn't necessary.

What to Expect at a Fertility Appointment
Your first appointment takes two to three hours, and we recommend both you and your partner attend. The appointment starts with a discussion between you and your doctor. You’ll go over medical history, causes of infertility and treatment options. Together, you’ll decide the best care plan for you.
Depending on your needs, you may also speak with a genetic counselor, psychologist, behavioral health provider or financial counselor. Preliminary blood work, testing and ultrasounds may also take place.
What to Bring to a Fertility Appointment
Please bring the following to your first appointment:
- Notes and questions
- Insurance and prescription cards
- OB/GYN records and records of previous treatments and tests, such as HSG reports or hormone testing
- A calendar for scheduling future appointments
Paying for Infertility Treatments
Health insurance benefits vary widely when it comes to fertility. Plans often address fertility testing separately from fertility treatments. We’ll help you understand fertility testing costs and your plan’s benefits during your first appointment.
