NICHE, Improving the Hospital Experience for Older Adults and Their Families

With greater than 50% of patients in adult patient care units 65 plus years, NICHE is a nurse-driven, interdisciplinary initiative to improve the hospital experience for older adults and their families.

Sanford Health is one of 229 hospitals in 44 states that are a designated NICHE hospital and Sanford is the only NICHE hospital in South Dakota. Sanford strives to have a unique environment and philosophy of elder friendly care to enhance hospital safety and comfort for older adults. With a core group of nationally certified Gerontological Registered Nurses, the Sanford NICHE Initiative recognizes and cares for the special needs of older adults, starting with those in the acute hospital. NICHE was developed by national nursing leaders at New York University and sponsored by the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing.
