Pediatric Residency Program

Resident at Sanford Children’s

Sanford Children’s is in the process of applying for accreditation of a new pediatric residency program. This new training program, led by Joseph Zenel, Jr., MD, will accommodate six residents per year in a three year training curriculum. If all goes as planned, we will admit our first year residency class in the summer of 2010.

Sanford Children’s Hospital will serve as the nidus of training for our residents; however, the program will take advantage of the distinctive characteristics of healthcare in South Dakota, including rural pediatrics and the unique aspects of caring for Native American children.

We envision a program that is flexible and supportive of each learner’s needs. Our residents will be able to take advantage of the exceptional training and research opportunities afforded by the national and international Sanford Children’s Clinics currently being developed, and additional research opportunities, both basic and translational in nature, abound at Sanford Research and the Sanford Children’s Health Research Center. Our residents will work side by side with medical students from the Sanford School of Medicine of The University of South Dakota, family medicine residents and other healthcare trainees from the region.

The immediate goal of the residency program is to enhance the care of the children of the Upper Midwest, by training specialists in children’s health who will populate our communities, both large and small. However, our residents will also learn a foundation of pediatric medicine that can serve as the basis for the most rigorous subspecialty fellowship programs.
