Spencer Boner Story

Spencer’s Story spencer

Harry and Mary Jo Boner of Brookings, SD, never imagined that a simple visit to the eye doctor for their four-year-old son, Spencer, would be the day their lives changed forever. During that appointment, the doctor noticed there was a pressure build-up in the back of Spencer's eyes. After an MRI at Sanford Children's, doctors revealed that Spencer had an egg-shaped cancerous tumor in part of his brain.

Just two days later, Harry and Mary Jo entrusted their son's life to the surgeons at Sanford Children's. Little Spencer needed to have brain surgery to remove the tumor. A month later, Spencer started the first of eight long rounds of chemotherapy.

Just more than one year after initial diagnosis, Spencer is now in remission! His family is very thankful for the support they received from Children’s Miracle Network, Sanford Health staff, friends, and family. "We continue to thank everyone for their prayers and support," Mary Jo said. Spencer will continue to have follow up MRI's every 3 months.

This survivor, now five-years-old, is an active kindergartener in Brookings, SD. He and his older sister, Abbey, enjoy playing together and making new family memories every day.
